First of all, liquid morphine is used in tiny quantities. This is why it is wonderful for patients who are unable to voice their pain.
It can be given sublingually, just under the tongue, or, in the side pocket of the cheek for patients who choke, can't swallow, or who appear to be sleeping because of the disease process. This medicine absorbs through the tissues in the mouth.
It takes about15 minutes to work. Where it really works its magic, is for shortness of breath. Almost instantly, it reduces the panic and sense of air hunger, which is most comforting to the patient as well as the family! The Hospice Nurse
